Chengdu Natural History Museum-Its Architectural Design Incorporating Local Features

As we’ve mentioned, our profession is 3d visualization, but we also pay close attention to buildings with characteristic architectural designs. Again, it’s time for us to share an awesome architecture-Chengdu Natural History Museum. Its design integrates local features, which is a good example of museum design.

Chengdu Natural History Museum is located in Chenghua District, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. It has a total construction area of 50,520 square meters and an exhibition hall area of 17,005 square meters. It has one underground floor and four floors above ground. It is the first public building with an irregular shape in Chengdu.

The main body of the building is composed of six monomers in the form of peaks and rocks, paying homage to Mount Shu in the Sichuan Basin. The six monomers are connected by winding pedestrian plank roads and bridge corridors, which have a very artistic conception of Shu Road.

The architectural space is divided into functional areas such as exhibition area, education area, public area, business area, and administrative management area. The museum has a total of six themed exhibition halls, including the Geological Environment Hall, the Mineral Resources Hall, the Longxing Sichuan and Chongqing Hall, the Dinosaur Quest Hall, the Life Quest Hall, and the Colorful Life Hall. Among them, the Geological Environment Hall and the Mineral Resources Hall are located on the first floor of the museum, the Longxing Chuanyu Hall and the Dinosaur Quest Hall are on the second floor of the museum, and the Life Quest Hall and the Colorful Life Hall are on the third floor of the museum.

The design concept of Chengdu Natural History Museum integrates a lot of Sichuan elements - Mount Shu, Shu Road, and Shu Water.

Mount Shu

The architects integrate high snow-capped mountains directly into the exterior shape of the museum, expressing the movement of the plate and the geological changes with the shape of the peaks and rocks and the texture of the zigzag cracks, in order to pay tribute to the Mount Shu. Meanwhile, to create the rocky effect of Mount Shu, this project adopts the double-layer curtain wall, and the total area of the outer curtain wall is 48,900 square meters. There are more than 70 folded surfaces at different angles, and more than 6,000 outer curtain wall supports.

Shu Road

The Shu Road is represented by the glass plank road that leads directly to the second floor outside the museum, which brings the experience of walking the plank road into the interior space of the museum. Overpasses and promenades are used to symbolize the artistic conception of the winding Shu Road. Visitors can not only feel the change of space but also recall the time change of Shu Road when walking in it.

Shu Water

The architect introduced the Chinese ancient wisdom of water management and irrigation into the outdoor park of the museum, and used the curved water flow and the reflecting pool to reflect the thousand-year-old Shu Water culture in Chengdu.

The exterior wall material of Chengdu Natural History Museum adopts the natural granite, and the exterior texture is consistent with the natural sedimentary characteristics of the stone. The surface of the stone is organically added with the light-transmitting holes which are like stars at night, symbolizing the evolution of celestial bodies and geological existence.

Chengdu Natural History Museum is a celebration of Chengdu’s modern ethos and historical legacy and symbolize this city’s innovative spirit. It fills the gap of comprehensive natural museum in southwest China and becomes a cultural landmark.
