The 31st Summer World University Games has been hosted in Chengdu, Sichuan province, China from July 28th to August 8th, 2023. The hosting of the Universiade has also attracted the attention of global people to the Dong'an Lake Sports Park in Chengdu, the venue of this event. Let us walk into this large sports park to take a look.
Dong An Lake Sports Park (also known as World Universiade Park) has a total construction area of approximately 320000 square meters and covers an area of 5000 acres. It is the core venue of the 31st Summer Universiade. It comprises a comprehensive sports field with 40000 seats, a multi-functional sports hall with 18000 seats, a swimming and diving hall with 5000 seats, and a compound small arena. It also includes buildings such as the Chengdu Universiade Museum and the Universiade Torch Tower. Let us have an overview of the main buildings in the park.
The Main Sports Venue
Architects designed the main sports venue in a circular shape. On the transparent roof of the stadium, architects present the sunbird pattern representing the essence of ancient Shu(Chengdu ) culture. The roof is currently the largest glass roof in Asian sports venues, with an area of approximately 29000 square meters, consisting of 12540 pieces of semi-tempered ultra-white laminated glazed glass. Using different colors of the colored glaze, the stadium magnified the 0.01 square meter "Sun God Bird" gold decoration by 2.7 million times as the roof pattern. The facade material of the stadium is made of bright silver aluminum profile blinds, making the entire venue resemble a spaceship, a round-shaped UFO with a strong sense of science fiction and futuristic. Three Attached Stadiums
These three gymnasiums are square in the floor plan and connected by a shared base. Indoor training facilities for basketball, table tennis, and badminton, as well as restaurants, shops, and parking lots are accommodated towards the open square.
The blinded curtain wall composed of silver aluminum elements makes the building complex extremely dazzling from a distance. The silver aluminum blinds gradually flip and open towards the center of the curtain wall, showcasing the shapes and colors of different functional spaces inside. Each building has its color code, making it easy for visitors to identify its location within the venue and gym. The roof adopts the louver structure of the curtain wall, so that the technical roof structure is enclosed, and the iconic design language of the ensemble can be clearly distinguished from the aerial view. The glass curtain wall between the building and the base recedes inward, forming the entrance area for each building.
The round-shaped main stadium and three square gymnasiums are integrated by landscape bridges, outdoor exhibition halls, sunken squares, etc., echoing the Chinese traditional philosophy of " a square earth with a round sky above" and "harmonious coexistence".
The opening ceremony of the 31st Universiade was held at the main stadium, having left a beautiful and profound impression on people around the world, and the three matched stadiums also successfully held competitions such as gymnastics and swimming. At present, it is only over 2 months since the end of the Universiade. The main sports venue has held multiple large-scale shows, and the three supporting gymnasiums have also been open to the public. Dong'an Lake Sports Park also attracts lots of citizens to exercise here, as well as tourists for sightseeing. Hence, we can realize that the architectural design for the stadiums and landscape design in Dong'an Lake Sports Park not only reflects traditional Chinese culture and modern development but also conforms to the concept of sustainable design.
